Supah Mash-Up Art Party

The Supah Mash-Up Art Party made its debut this past weekend. Here’s a shot of all the completed pieces for the show. I collaborated with Jared Andrew Schorr on three of the images shown above. These are all one-of-a-kind and come framed. Prints of the images are not available.

The Princess Mononoke image (top left) has sold. The rest of the pieces are still available. The two Ponyo images are sold as a set. Visit the links below for details on availability and purchasing.

WonderGround Dates

It’s turning out to be an exciting (and busy) summer. Here’s a quick recap of my dates at WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District – Disneyland Resort.

Tuesday, May 21 11:00 AM (Pacific Time) – Tickets for the Hipster Mickey Cocktail Reception go on sale. There will only be a limited amount of tickets available for this event. More information here.

Friday May 24 and Saturday May 25th – Artist Showcase at WonderGround Gallery 6-8pm. I’ll be debuting the new Mickey Mouse piece “Modern Mouse”. More information available here. This is also Memorial Day weekend. To kick off this Monstrous Summer, the parks will be open 24 hours starting Friday morning at 6AM and remaining open until Saturday morning 6AM.

Thursday July 18th 7-10 PM – Hipster Mickey Cocktail Reception at WonderGround Gallery. Come see the debut of the Hipster Mickey line with new product and exclusive merchandise. Event information here.

I’ll also be attending Comic Con in San Diego, CA (July 18-21) for the very first time as well as the third D23 EXPO in Anaheim, CA (August 9-11). I will not be exhibiting at either one of these events this year.

Hipster Mickey Cocktail Reception At WonderGround Gallery

I have been so pleased and pleasantly surprised by the reception my original Hipster Mickey piece has received since debuting at WonderGround Gallery last June (2012). Seeing the little guy on mugs, t-shirts and bags has been a dream come true for this long-time Disney fan.

That dream continues to grow with today’s announcement of the all-new Hipster Mickey line debuting at the gallery on July 18th, 2013. This is beyond anything I could have imagined. There will be a reception and signing event held at the gallery to celebrate the launch of this new set of images and merchandise. Tickets for the event go on sale Tuesday May 21 2013 at 11:00 AM (Pacific). For all the details and info on purchasing tickets, click here. Make sure to get your tickets right away if you’re interested in attending. They will be extremely limited. “Happiest Hipster On Earth” (Above) will be the first in a new series of images featuring Mickey Mouse in all his Hipster glory!

I am so excited for these new pieces and so grateful for the opportunity to showcase them at this very cool gallery. And thank you to all the fans of Hipster Mickey. WonderGround Gallery – Artist Showcase

“Modern Mouse” by Jerrod Maruyama will be available as a deluxe print May 24th at WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District – Disneyland Resort.

I am so excited to be heading back to WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District – Disneyland Resort. I’ll be debuting my new Mickey Mouse piece “Modern Mouse” as well as signing all of my work currently available in the gallery. The Artist Showcase will be May 24th – 25th (that’s Memorial Day weekend) from 6- 8 pm. If you live nearby or happen to be in town that weekend, please stop by and say hello.

My thanks to the great folks at WonderGround for inviting me back. I always have such a great time. I am so thrilled to be a part of this wonderful Gallery.

Supah Mash-Up Art Party

Hana of supahcute.com is back with another art show! Teaming up once again with Leanna Lin’s Wonderland, this new show is all about collaborations. I am thrilled to be participating and even more excited to be partnering up with the super-talented Jared Andrew Schorr. I first met Jared at the opening of WonderGround Gallery last June. I’ve admired his work for some time and it’s a thrill to be collaborating with him on this show. We decided to do a tribute to the films of Studio Ghibli. We’re both big fans of these characters and stories so this show was great excuse to create some really fun pieces. We’ll both have individual pieces in the show along with the pieces we worked on together. All pieces will be for sale at the show. If you sign up with Leanna Lin’s website, you will have access to early previews and sales of all the pieces in this very cool show. Head on over to the site to see who else is participating. And if you’re close by, make sure to show up for opening night on May 11th from 6-10 PM.

I am always appreciative when someone shares my work with their followers. I’d like to thank Meredith Carroll for doing just that. Meredith has written a few very generous articles on my artwork over on Disney’s babble.com. She did a nice tribute to Hipster Mickey and my work at WonderGround Gallery. Dapper Day 2013

I was thrilled to be asked by the organizer of Dapper Day to design characters for this very cool event. If you’ve never heard of Dapper Day, head on over to the site to read more about its origins and history. In short, it’s a fabulous excuse to dress up and look fashionably dapper at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA and the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, FL.

The characters I designed will appear on merchandise available the day of the event. There will be a very limited number of items available – including magnets, key chains, tote bags and more. Depending on quantities, some items will be available online following the event. This year’s Spring Event takes place Sunday, February 24th in both parks. Check the website for the schedule of events and meet-ups. If you’re close to one of these parks, make sure to join in on the festivities. And if you miss this one, don’t worry. There’s a second event scheduled for the fall. Start shopping now.

“So Happy Together” is my contribution to the GET A ROOM show opening this week at Bottleneck Gallery (Brooklyn, NY). The show opens Friday, February 15th and runs through March 8th. Online sales will begin on Saturday, February 16th. Followers of Bottleneck Gallery on Facebook can preview all of the art for the show in a special preview window offered just before the physical show opens. DisneyWorld Trip 2013

What a great way to kick off 2013! At long last, I made a return trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. My last visit to the Magic Kingdom was way back in February of 2001. Much has changed since then. And it was because of these changes that this trip was postponed several times in the last few years. Between the building of Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the recent expansion of the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland, there were so many great reasons to wait. I’m glad I did – both of those were highlights of my trip.

I really enjoyed new Fantasyland. The much-needed expansion had some rather impressive upgrades – the best of which has to be the Be Our Guest restaurant. Wonderfully re-creating the Beast’s castle from Beauty and The Beast, this new lunch and dinner spot is beautifully themed with lots of fun details. It’s probably the most immersive dining experience you can have at any of the parks. I think it’s up there with Disneyland’s popular Blue Bayou restaurant. While the new Mermaid ride is a carbon copy of California Adventure’s version, the Magic Kingdom’s queue for this dark ride is beautiful. Gorgeous waterfalls and sculpted rock work surround a re-creation of Prince Eric’s sea side castle. It’s built for long lines and by afternoon, this ride has a 90 minute wait. No wonder they offer Fast Pass for this attraction. Enchanted Tales with Belle – an elaborate meet and greet with the Princess - was an instant 60 minute wait so we skipped it. We did visit Gaston’s Tavern – another faithful re-creation of one of the film’s environments – and enjoyed a Le Fou’s brew, a sweet concoction that’s pretty much the same as Cars Land’s Apple Freeze. Overall I thought new Fantasyland looked terrific. Once the Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train is completed next year, I think it will be a beautiful land and just perfect for the young Princess loving crowd.

Overall it was a great trip and long over due. Here are a few of the details from our just-over-a-week stay.

We stayed at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. This is one of the Value resorts. The price was decent but there are no frills.
Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios were easily done in one day each.
Eating at Boma in the Animal Kingdom lodge was one of the best meals we had.
Epcot is one of my favorite Disney Parks – lots to see there including the goofy new version of Test Track and an adorable animatronic Remy (Ratatouille) in the France pavilion.
The Magic Kingdom was by far the busiest of all the parks and the only one we spent more than one day at. They have a few attractions that Disneyland doesn’t, including Carousel of Progress, PeopleMover, Country Bear Jamboree and (my favorite) Mickey’s Philharmagic. The Electrical Parade is also there.
We rented a car for two days and regretted not having a car for the whole trip. While the transportation from the hotel to the parks is convenient, there can be long waits. Having a car would have allowed us to eat off site get around a little quicker – especially if you want to visit the other resorts.

When planning our trip, we made sure to leave one day to head over to Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure park to check out the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I was thoroughly impressed with this new addition to the otherwise mediocre theme park. All of the architecture and themeing of this small part of the park was top notch and the closest thing to a Disney Park experience that I’ve seen. The main attraction, located in a wonderfully re-created Hogwarts show building, was Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey – a crazy simulator ride that almost made me lose my Butterbeer. It was a really great ride full of special effects and showpieces but just a little too intense for me. I would have loved this ride – ten years ago.

In the end, we had a lot of fun, ate way too much and spent way too much money. It’s always fun to spend a week visiting all-things Disney. But it will probably be another ten years before I make the trek back. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to start planning my next Disneyland trip.
