Tomi Ungerer Tribute

In November of this year, I was asked to create a tribute image for artist Tomi Ungerer. The controversial illustrator and writer of countless children’s books is the subject of the recent documentary Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story.  The film, which is currently available through Nextflix, is a fascinating look at Ungerer’s life and unusual career. While I was familiar with many of his children’s book titles, I knew very little of his life and the other, more controversial, aspects of his career. He seems a passionate man – overflowing with talent and armed with a wicked sense of humor. He follows his heart and you can’t help but admire him for all the unconventional choices he’s made over the course of his impressive career. He did not take the easy road by any means. I think the film is required viewing for all artists. If you haven’t already, check out this fantastic documentary on this amazing man.

The acclaimed film was directed, produced and written by Brad Bernstein for Corner of The Cave Media – the company which he co-founded in 2012. It was Brad that approached me to do the tribute piece and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity. I am honored that he would ask me to create art in tribute to this great artist. My sincere thanks to Brad for making this happen.

The final art was presented to Tomi at the premiere of the documentary in Dublin on December 13th.
